Understanding Cortisol and Its Impact
Stress gets a bad rap, but it’s not all negative—cortisol, the stress hormone, plays a vital role in keeping us alert and energised. However, too much cortisol can cause problems. Let’s dive into what it means and how to manage it.
Chronic high cortisol levels can lead to weight gain, poor sleep, and increased risk of chronic illnesses (I'm sure this is the single hormone that cripples me)! Anyway factors like lack of sleep, poor diet, and ongoing stress can keep cortisol elevated. Which can lead to poor mental wellbeing, weight gain (& stubborn belly fat) among other things.
To combat this, focusing on stress management techniques like mindfulness (a fave of mine) or yoga. Eating a balanced diet and prioritising sleep are also key. Regular moderate exercise—but not overtraining—can also help regulate cortisol levels effectively.
While cortisol is essential, keeping it in check is crucial for health. By managing stress, eating well, and staying active, you can keep cortisol at healthy levels.
So - for the work-a-holics like me, be sure to switch off and reduce your stress you'll seriously achieve 3x more!
