The Number 1 Problem When Starting Exercise and How to Overcome It

Starting a new exercise routine can be exciting, but let’s face it—sticking to it is another story. Motivation is often the biggest hurdle, so let’s tackle it head-on.

Lack of motivation usually stems from setting goals that are too vague or overwhelming, sudden or frankly not enjoyable.

The solution? Make your goals specific and achievable. Instead of saying, “I want to get fit,” try, “I’ll walk for 20 minutes every morning.” Accountability helps too—partnering with a friend or joining a class can keep you on track. Start small to build confidence and momentum, and celebrate your progress along the way. Remember, motivation often follows action, not the other way around.

Motivation is the trickiest part of starting an exercise routine, but setting clear goals, finding support, and starting small can make all the difference.

My favourite saying... "when motivation lacks you need discipline". Remember that when you're lacking motivation and then it's a game of you v your mind.
